Chapter 1: The Great One

After finishing my last day at Killbear at 15:15 on a find Saturday afternoon, I set off to pick up Dom and then head to a thanksgiving feast. But not before I took care of some last minute buisness.

To the east, over ranges and rivers, a Great Gray had been spotted. My kinsman Lev and the fine lady Larissa had pinned one at km 22 in Algonquin, and I had been invited to take it down. With little sunlight left, I raced to the park (with just enough time to stop at the beer store) and arrived at the staffhouse, where I found an interesting-looking roadkill on the driveway. It looked like an oversized ruffed grouse but when I got out, I picked up the warm carcass of a Great Gray! Convinced this must have been the one, I brought it to Lev and demanded an explanation.

Fortunately, this was just a prank. He had taken it out of the freezer and put it on the pavement to devastate me (the warmth of the carcass was simply from sitting in the sun). Then we quested into the field where the real one dwelt, and Lev promptly spotted its round gray form atop a spruce. And it was glorious!

A walk on Mizzy Lake Trail looked irresistible before I left.
